Exercise, Illness

So, right after I published my exercise post last week, I started to feel a bit off. As it turns out, I was sick pretty much all week, and it wasn’t until Saturday that I felt like myself again. Because of this, my work outs were very minimal this week. I’m ok working out with a cold, but actual illness I avoid because it can be pretty dangerous (heart issues. ack!). So, this week was all about rest, unfortunately.

  • Sunday: Rest
  • Monday: Rest
  • Tuesday: Rest
  • Wednesday: 1.19 mile walk (very slow!)
  • Thursday: Rest
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: 2.65 mile walk!

Total Miles: 3.84 miles of walking

Ouch. My goal for the month was maintenance, but this week sure didn’t help. The good news is that we don’t lose our cardio or running base in a week, so it should be fine. However, this isn’t exactly how I wanted to go back into training…

Now it’s your turn to share! Is it hard for you to rest when you’re sick? What’s one of your favorite things to do when you’re sick? (I’ve watched a season and a half of the office!)

Whew. Time is definitely flying by! Doesn’t it always fly by during the Christmas season? I’m still trying to fight off a nasty little cold I got from a family member at Thanksgiving, and while it’s not too bad of a cold, it’s definitely drained some of my normal energy this week. Just because I’ve felt a little off doesn’t mean I’m not still thankful though! Here are a few things I’m thankful for this week:

I’m thankful for Christmas parties! Since I last posted I’ve been to 3 Christmas parties (2 of them associated with work), and I’ve loved all 3. Both work parties had all sorts of delicious foods, and the other party was a gift exchange and movie night at my place with a few friends from grad school. All three were relaxing, fun, and included lots of laughter!

I’m thankful for a simple “thanks”. As one of my clients was leaving this past week she thanked me for everything this semester. If you need thanks for what you do, counseling is certainly not the right field to be in, and I definitely don’t expect it. Because of that, when someone does say thank you, it means a huge amount to me, and I definitely appreciate it. Hearing that one simple word definitely warmed my heart that day.

I’m thankful for beautiful sunshine and warm days. It’s been cold the last few days, but the weekend and start to the week was either sunny or warm each day. This past Friday I got to go on a 7 mile walk in the beautiful 65 degree sunshine, and it was fantastic. It’s really rare to ever be able to wear shorts in December. I’m thankful for beautiful days amidst the rainy cold days!

I’m thankful for access to a bike in the winter. In the winter I’m not able to bike outside, both because there’s ice and because it’s dark and I don’t work out alone when it’s dark. While a stationary bike isn’t ideal, I’ve found a great hill program that I can do, and it’s great cross training.

I’m thankful for Christmas lights! I have lights hanging up all over my living room and my office at work. All day I’m surrounded by twinkling white lights, and I can’t help but smile when I see them. Christmas cheer all around!!

I’m thankful for an oven and stove in my kitchen. This is really simple, and doesn’t necessarily add any joy (at least consciously) to my life. However, this weekend as I spent a few hours cooking, I realized how much more difficult things would be if I had to build a fire and cook over that. Ovens and stoves are really convenient, and I’m thankful for them!

Now it’s your turn to share! What are you feeling thankful for today? What’s one modern convenience that you’re glad you have?

Illness, Travel

By the time we got back to the hotel at the end of Day 3 of our trip, I was feeling pretty tired and blah, and I thought the lack of sleep was really catching up to me. My dad mentioned he wasn’t feeling great either, so we headed to bed quickly. WELL- turns out we weren’t going to get any sleep that night because my dad and I ended up with food poisoning. You know what’s worse than food poisoning? Food poisoning in a foreign country, in a hotel, with one tiny little bathroom and 2 people being sick. It was a very, very long night.

By the time breakfast hit I was at least done being sick, and just felt very tired and achy. After staying in bed all morning and eating bit of fruit and cereal my mom got at breakfast, I decided that I couldn’t completely waste my last day in Spain. It was very clear that we couldn’t head back into the old city, but I thought I could at least get outside and walk a little up and down the street (that didn’t go so well because I needed to sit down every minute or two because I’d get dizzy). I didn’t want to waste the day, and I thought maybe lifting my mental spirits by being outside would help me physically feel better.

Even if I wasn’t feeling great, this view was pretty fantastic! My mom and I enjoyed the afternoon looking out over the city and sitting down on one of the streets. I finally had enough and slept for an hour or so and watched some of the Ironman Kona championship online. I ended up sleeping only a few hours that night before having to be up early for a flight. Flying makes me feel a little off anyways, so going into it with a badly hurting stomach wasn’t so ideal.

Our flight from Valencia to Paris went quickly, but once we hit Paris it was a nightmare. We got delayed leaving Valencia because of weather in Paris, and then when we got into Paris we had to go through customs and security again. If you’ve ever been to the Paris airport, you know what a complete nightmare that place is! It’s so disorganized and incredibly poorly marked, and even the people who worked there struggled to help us figure out where we needed to be. We ran up to a gate and they nicely called ahead to our gate and held the plane for us. We were still sprinting through the airport (after barely being over food poisoning but still feeling sick and dizzy), getting yelled at by people because it was incredibly crowded, and the entire thing was just very stressful. Maybe one of my worst airport moments ever. We ended up getting to our gate 20-30 minutes after the flight was supposed to leave, but because of the delay due to weather, there were still others they were waiting on as well. The flight back to Detroit was nine and a half hours, and we ended up watching 3 movies. I didn’t sleep, unfortunately, but I felt too sick to my stomach to sleep.

The views from the plane definitely helped too! This was the English channel.

Some oatmeal in Detroit calmed my stomach a bit, and my third flight back home went quickly.

One big hint- when traveling, bring some food that you know will be ok if you aren’t feeling well. Having a few food staples was critical in my ability to get some calories into me when I wasn’t feeling well.

So, as it turns out, we really only ended up with a day and a half to walk around Valencia even though I was gone for 5 full days. It was a pretty fantastic trip, even with the food poisoning!

Sometimes trips don’t always turn out the way we think they will, and that’s ok. I tried to enjoy every minute of it that I could, even when I felt pretty bad because of the food poisoning. So that sums up my time in Valencia. I know this recap wasn’t the most exciting, but it’s hard to make food poisoning exciting:) I’ll do one more post on this trip about eating in Valencia!

Now it’s your turn to share! Have you ever gotten food poisoning while traveling? What’s one of your food staples when you aren’t feeling well?

Eh. It was another week. This should’ve been the best peak of my training, but instead I  still felt off from the food poisoning until the end of the week, and that really affected my workouts. Lets just say that I’m not so confident in my training. Nonetheless, I did get some good workouts in and even participated in a virtual race!

  • Sunday: 25 minutes of sprinting in Paris Airport
  • Monday: 4.51 mile walk (this was SLOW but it was good to get moving again)
  • Tuesday: 3.1 mile Run (virtual race), 3.75 mile walk
  • Wednesday: Rest
  • Thursday: Rest
  • Friday: .5 mile run, 3.00 mile bike
  • Saturday: 6.2 mile run

Total Miles: 9.8 mile run+ 25 min sprints + 8.26 mile walk +3.00 mile bike

Like I said, it was a week. I’m going to do a separate post on where I’m at currently and how this might impact my race (in 11 days! Agh!). If you haven’t checked out Lindsay’s guest post on my blog, make sure to do so! It’s great!

Now it’s your turn to share! What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this coming week?

Fall, Food, Illness, Running, Travel

Happy Thursday, a day to focus on what we’re thankful for in our lives! Last night was a little frustrating. I picked up a friend from the bus station downtown, and on my way down there I ended up sitting in standstill traffic for over an hour. FRUSTRATING! Traffic was so slow, and it ended up taking 4 hours, which was my whole night. I obviously got less sleep than usual because of this, so I could use a bit of a mental shift this morning. Here are some things I’m thankful for right now!

I’m thankful I got to go to Spain! I’m planning to do a post (or 2) about my trip, but I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to travel to a new country and experience their culture!

Nutella Crepes in the Old City, Valencia, Spain

I’m thankful that I survived food poisoning and I’m feeling better. Food poisoning in a hotel overseas is really pretty nasty, and it was a bummer to lose some tourist time because of that. I’m happy to say that I feel back to normal, and was so thankful to be able to run again after being sick!

I’m thankful for pumpkin! Not only does pumpkin look cute as a decoration, but it’s really tasty as well! In October and November I find myself putting pumpkin in lots of food, and it’s delicious! (Pumpkin Grilled Cheese Sandwich & Pumpkin French Toast are some examples)

I’m thankful for the Broadway Showtunes station on Pandora. My brother just told me about it last week and suggested that I would like it. Ok- I love it! It’s so fun! I obviously can’t listen to music while talking to clients, but I listen to it while doing paperwork. It’s so happy. Check it out:)

I’m thankful for apples in the fall! That delicious tasting bite that crunches when you bite into an apple- it’s fantastic! My favorite fall apple is Honeycrisp- yum!!!

Pretty- and equally as delicious!

Now it’s your turn to share! What are you feeling thankful for today? What do you do when you get stuck in standstill traffic?

Well, some weeks things pop up that we just can’t control. And then we adjust our schedules to them. This seems to be the theme of this training cycle. It hasn’t been fantastic (and I talked about having to be flexible in my post last week). This past Wednesday morning (EARLY) I flew to Spain. From Wednesday-Friday my workouts simply included walking around the city. Friday night I got food poisoning, so I’m still not back to working out today. Things happen. It’s ok. Here’s what the week looked like:

  • Sunday: 8.5 mile run
  • Monday: 3.27 mile walk
  • Tuesday: 3.1 mile walk
  • Wednesday: Travel
  • Thursday: 2 hours walking around Valencia, Spain
  • Friday: spent the day walking around Valencia, Spain
  • Saturday: food posioning. REST

Yeah. It was a great start to the week. I’m not sure how i’ll get a long run in this week, and it’s almost time to start tapering for the race. We’ll see how it goes.

Now it’s your turn to share! What was something that stood out to you that happened last week? If you’ve ever had food poisoning- how long did you wait before working out again?

Well, this week was less than ideal in the exercise department. It started off ok, but on Tuesday night I got sick and didn’t work out again until Saturday. While it was the smart decision to rest, it not only gave me low mileage for the week and made me miss workouts (not that important really), but I also missed being outside in the awesome weather! Saturday I finally felt pretty close to back to normal, and I was able to get in my long run for the week! Here’s what the week looked like:

  • Sunday: Rest day following long run
  • Monday: 4.12 mile walk
  • Tuesday: 3.0 mile elliptical
  • Wednesday: Sick
  • Thursday: Sick
  • Friday: Rest & Recovery
  • Saturday: 7.25 mile run (Amazing!) + 2.2 mile walk later in the day

Total Miles: 7.25 mile run + 3.0 mile elliptical + 6.32 mile walk = 16.57 miles

It was ok. I missed my sprints run for the week, but given some recent knee pain that might not be so bad either. I wrote a whole post on my 7 mile long run already (which I linked to above), so I won’t talk about that either. Despite being sick, I’m happy I was able to get a run in, some walks, and a day of cross training too!

Now it’s your turn to share! Are you good at taking time off when you’re sick, or do you try to ignore the fact and work out anyways? What are you looking forward to this week?

Illness, Thankful

Wow these weeks are flying by! I truly can’t believe we’re so far into March already. Does it feel like time is going incredibly fast this year? Maybe the mild fall  and winter has something to do with it? Ok, here are some of the things I’m feeling thankful for this thursday (wow that’s a lot of “t’s”!).

I’m thankful for my foam roller. It hurts so good. Seriously though, I tend to have IT band issues frequently, so foam rolling regularly is a must for me. I also love rolling my back and using it to stretch my neck and shoulders. It helps loosen me up and even helps decrease headaches sometimes.

I’m thankful for medicine for migraines. Seriously. I’m SO SO thankful for it. I’ve had a migraine for the last two weeks, and the meds that I have allow me to continue to function pretty well, and I’m thankful for that!

I’m thankful for clean water to drink. Just the fact that I can turn on the facet and get clean water whenever I want is amazing. I’m thankful that I can drink lots of clean water every day.

I’m thankful for the ability to take pictures. Cameras are amazing inventions, aren’t they? I’m thankful I can document important events in my life!

I’m thankful for massages. Like I said above, I’ve had a nagging migraine for the last few weeks, and massages make a huge impact on my level of pain. I’m so thankful that massages are helpful.

I’m thankful for warm weather. 2 weeks of weather in the 70’s and low 80’s in March? YES PLEASE!

Now it’s your turn to share! What are you feeling thankful for right now? Have you ever gotten a massage before? If so, what was your favorite part of it?

Exercise, Food, Health, Illness, Relationships, Thankful

This week has definitely been a different sort of week then any other week of 2012, and I’m ok with it. I do miss my very predictable schedule of January, but I love being a bit busier as well. My Valentine’s Day turned out pretty much exactly as I predicted it would, and I had lots of fun doing things that I love. And now on to some things I’m thankful for this thursday:

I’m thankful my parents came to visit this past weekend! It had been a number of weeks since I had seen them, so it was a fun first visit of 2012!

I’m thankful that I’ve gotten my voice back: After a cold that left me with very little voice for almost a week, I’m happy to have my voice back once again! It certainly makes doing my job a little easier, and I’m sure my clients enjoy not hearing me croak when I open my mouth.

I’m thankful for the frozen yogurt I ate on Valentine’s Day

I’m thankful for a fantastic, sweaty elliptical workout today. I did a quick 25 minutes on the elliptical after work, and felt much better after my workout then I did before. Plus, after the major sugar dose I had yesterday, it felt good to do something healthy.

I’m thankful for fun TV nights with my friends. Whether we’re watching Biggest Loser, Dancing With The Stars, or some other TV show, it’s a fun break to have in the middle of the week.

Thankful Thursday

As I type this I’ve almost completely lost my voice, and it hurts to strain and speak. This is bad news because I have 2 lectures to give on Friday. Between now and then I will be drinking lots of hot tea and trying to speak as little as possible. I guess it’s great that today I get to focus on things I’m thankful for right now!

I’m thankful that I’ve built my mileage up to 6! In my wildest dreams a few years ago I would’ve never thought I could run 6 miles. BUT I DID, and I felt great the entire run! I felt strong, and I had a great time:)

I’m thankful for hot water and hot tea: This has allowed me to get through my days seeing clients while keeping my voice! It’s amazing how much a simple cup of hot tea helps a sore throat and a hoarse voice!

I’m thankful I can still talk. I haven’t completely lost my voice, so that’s a great thing! My dad suggested making two signs to hold up in my sessions: 1 would say “mmhmm” and the other would say “how do you feel about that?”. Funny guy. Needless to say I didn’t actually do that, and made my way through 6 clients today while still keeping my voice! Yay:)

I’m thankful that I had time to put some rest weeks in my training plan. I think I’m starting to get shin splints, which is not only annoying, but can definitely create some difficulties in training. Luckily this week I only had 7 miles on my schedule, and I can cut some of those if needed. Rest, ice, and elevation are more important! I’m thankful I started training early enough that I can take a week off without stressing.

I’m thankful that I get to see my family this weekend! I’m really excited about this fact:)

Now it’s your turn to share! What are you thankful for today?
